Discussion:
File compare has slowed drastically?

It seems like the time it takes meld to compare files has recently
increased drastically (around 10X). I _think_ it happed starting with
3.16.0. It used to take 2-3 seconds to run a diff on a 5000-line
source file, and now it takes 20-30 seconds.

Did I break my installation, or is this a known "feature"?

I had similar problems two weeks ago but failed to reproduce them after updating to latest master.

It looks similar to known bug: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=768300

That slowdown was fixed in current master and meld-3-16 branches near 2016-07-02 by
https://git.gnome.org/browse/meld/commit/?id=080a20c18c4e7970b690c4785663fe26333fc313
and
https://git.gnome.org/browse/meld/commit/?id=8f2dcd1baceb8f297f67f550c6c707e72d3749d1

But there isn't yet any meld releases incorporating those fixes.
So you may try the fixed version by running bin/meld from a fresh checkout of meld-3-16 branch of https://git.gnome.org/browse/meld

Thanks! That looks like it's probably it. I almost always have text
filters enabled (usually at least one of the whitespace filters).

I think I'll just downgrade to 3.14 until the fix comes out.

I've just released 3.16.2 which should fix this for you.

cheers,

I finally got around to installing 3.16.2, and it does indeed fix the
problem. Thanks once again for your excellent work!
